Our story

From a competition idea to a working biotech

AlgaNova began at a Startup Weekend on the Catalan coast, born to help a local producer, Microalgae Lab, transform their sustainable biomass into attractive, high-value products. We saw a celebrated superfood held back by traditional formats, and we set out to change that.

Rather than just selling raw biomass, we bridge the gap between scientific potential and market reality. As a young, driven team backed by experienced industry mentors, we combine fresh innovation with strategic expertise to ensure every solution we deliver is consistent and impactful.

Today, that drive runs along two tracks: accelerating agricultural performance and reshaping health nutrition. From our roots in Tarragona, we want to transform industries and completely redefine the region's blue bioeconomy.

AlgaNova works in close collaboration with Microalgae Lab, a specialist microalgae cultivation company based in Spain, founded by Mario Muñoz. Microalgae Lab operates a highly automated and sustainable microalgae production plant, and is responsible for producing the biomass and phycocyanin extract that forms the biological foundation of our products.

Frequently asked questions

It is a plant input derived from spirulina microalgae that stimulates natural processes in crops and soil. Rather than acting as a conventional fertiliser, NovaTerra is formulated to support plants in taking up nutrients more efficiently and in coping better with environmental stress.

NovaTerra is produced through a controlled enzymatic hydrolysis process. This unlocks the active fractions inside the spirulina cell in a consistent way, so each batch delivers a clean, traceable specification.

NovaTerra is currently in development and regulatory preparation, designed from the ground up around relevant European and Spanish frameworks. We are working toward formal registration and welcome conversations with partners who want to be involved in the validation process.

The formulation is aimed at high-value crops where nutrient efficiency and stress resilience matter most. The best fit depends on your region and rotation, which is exactly what we explore together in an initial conversation and trial design.

Ficogel is built around phycocyanin, a microalgae-derived compound with strong anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. We are developing it into formats that are tastier, more stable and more bioavailable than raw extract, suited for functional nutrition and pharmaceutical R&D. We are currently working with early partners and welcome enquiries.

Ficogel

Phycocyanin, the blue pigment in microalgae, is one of nature's most potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compounds. The problem is that in its raw extracted form it is bitter, unstable and difficult to incorporate into products people actually want to consume. Ficogel is our response to that gap: using high-purity phycocyanin sourced through our partner Microalgae Lab, we are developing formats that are genuinely palatable, stable and effective, targeting the nutritional supplement and pharmaceutical markets.
